When I was researching and writing my book Suddenly Frugal, the best piece of decorating advice I got from an expert was on frugal ways to redecorate your house. That is, instead of going out and buying all new things, he suggested moving decor from the dining room to the living room and the family room to the kitchen. Basically, mix things up. By changing which room something was displayed in or which painting you had hanging on the wall, you gave that room a fresh look without spending a dime.

Want to give your interior a new look this weekend without even having to open a can of paint? Then check out these 4 tips.

  1. Add different pillows. Hot hues this fall are anything in the "jewel tone" category, including emerald, amethyst and sapphire. Give your room a modern look by finding pillows that fit this color scheme and adding them to your favorite easy chair or couch.
  2. Change your furniture's look with slipcovers. Perhaps you're still recovering from those plastic cushion covers in your mother's house, but today's slipcovers are fashion forward and can add versatility to a room's look. You can throw a slipcover over a love seat that your dog (and his fur) has perhaps loved a little too much. Or dress up your dining room by putting slipcovers on dining room chairs.
  3. Hang up new stuff on the walls. You could take a page from my book and move art from one room to another, or you can create your own wall masterpiece with fabric. "Hang a curtain rod on a feature wall and drape inexpensive fabric in a great fall color," advises interior and furniture designer Angelo Surmelis, who sells his wares on QVC, including a set of three paisley imprinted ottomans. "This brings some color into your room and it adds a layer of texture, which is perfect for fall."
  4. Change the fragrance of a room. Clustering scented candles in new and different places will bring different aromas to your home. Additionally, you can try a modern twist on the plug-in fragrance appliance, such as Febreze's new Noticeables. A great fall scent would be something earthy or spicy—think cinnamon or nutmeg. A bowl of freshly picked apples can also add a new look to a room and a new scent.

What are some tricks you use to redecorate a room without doing anything major or spending a lot of money?

Another idea is to staple matching fabrics from a couch, curtain, etc. on a canvas for a wall treatment.
