While I love the notion of clearing out clutter and cashing in, I also love the idea of finding ways to benefit good causes. One way you can do that this spring is this: as you clean out your closets, think about which items you no longer need or want that you can donate to a charity. For example, whenever I consign my clothes, whatever the consignment shop doesn't take, I take right to Goodwill.

Here are the top 5 things you can donate this spring:

  1. Computers. Through a partnership with Dell, many Goodwill locations now accept computers to be recycled for free, regardless of whether they are in working condition. You can also pack up an old laptop or netbook as well as accessories, such as mice and printers, and donate them to Goodwill to be recycled through that Dell Reconnect program.
  2. Cell phones. If you've ever upgraded to a new cell phone, it's likely you have an old one somewhere at home. Most wireless stores have drop boxes where you can recycle your old phones for a good cause, such as the Verizon Wireless HopeLine that benefits organizations working to prevent domestic violence. Or you can use a website, such as Earth 911, to locate donation and/or recycling options nearby.
  3. Books. Goodwill will take any old books off your hands, that's for sure. But you can also donate books in good condition to your local library for book sales they might have as part of their fundraising efforts.
  4. Clothing. Now is a great time to let go of the jeans that never quite fit or that sweater that wasn't quite your style. Many houses of worship have thrift stores that benefit indigent individuals and would gladly accept your clothing donations. Also, look for good causes that help adults transitioning from welfare to work, such as The Career Wardrobe in Philadelphia.
  5. Housewares. Sometimes we inherit household items from others or receive them as gifts. If you have a second toaster, vacuum cleaner or blender that you don't need, you can always donate them to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or a church yard sale.

Not sure if you're ready to give something up? Check out these questions to determine if that item is clutter or a keeper.

I make my donations on a monthly basis. I have picked two charities and send them both checks every month.
