9. Mixed Lettuces

Number 9 are spring mix/mixed lettuces—you know, those bags of lettuce that you can buy precut and ready to serve. More than half of those surveyed (59%) reported buying spring mixes, a product that didn't even exist back in 1980, when good old iceberg lettuce was all you had. If you like to buy this new-fangled kind of lettuce, always wash it well before serving, even if it says prewashed on the package. Remember: back in 2006 the FDA issued warnings about E. coli contamination of spring mix lettuces.
