Snails and slugs are pretty much the omnivores of the garden pest family—in that they will eat nearly everything in your garden. This includes the leaves on your plants to the fruit and vegetables you are growing on those plants. However, salt is a slug's kryptonite and your best weapon against these mollusks. My mother would put out shallow dishes of beer to catch and kill the slugs in her garden. You can try sprinkling salt on the ground but not on the plants themselves—the salt will kill the plants along with the slugs and snails.
